Fitness After 40: The Best Workout Advice I Can Give You

Hello, I’m Paula—a fitness professional with over 35 years of experience helping women feel strong, confident, and energized. If you’re over 40 and wondering how to stay fit without exhausting yourself or spending hours in the gym, this is for you.

Here’s the truth: fitness after 40 doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to be consistent and sustainable. Let me break it down for you:

1. Motivation Isn’t Always There—And That’s Okay

Out of every 10 workouts, you’ll probably only feel motivated for 3. The other 7? You’ll do them because you know how good you’ll feel afterward. That’s discipline—and it’s what builds results.

2. Rethink Your Workout Split

Forget the old-school “chest day” or “arm day.” Instead, try:

  • Upper/Lower body splits
  • Push/Pull routines

These are more efficient and easier to stick with, especially if you’re juggling work, family, and life.

3. You Don’t Need to Work Out Every Day

3 to 4 workouts per week are plenty to see results. More isn’t always better—especially if it leads to burnout.

4. Short Workouts Still Count

You don’t need to spend an hour in the gym for it to be “worth it.”
30 to 60 minutes is perfect—and more sustainable long-term.

5. A “Bad” Workout Is Better Than No Workout

Even if you’re tired, distracted, or just not feeling it—showing up matters. Progress comes from consistency, not perfection.

6. Consistency Beats Intensity

You don’t need to go all-out every session. What matters most is showing up regularly. That’s how you build strength, stamina, and confidence.

7. Want Me to Take the Guesswork Out?

If you’re thinking, “Paula, can you just tell me what to do?”—I’ve got you.
