As I celebrate my birthday this Thursday, I find myself reflecting on how fitness has evolved since 1967, the year I was born. From basic calisthenics to high-tech workouts, the journey of fitness is truly fascinating. Join me as I explore the differences and share a personal story that highlights this transformation.

Fitness in 1967

In 1967, fitness routines were simple and straightforward. People often engaged in calisthenics, running, and basic weight training. Gyms were sparse, and home fitness equipment was almost non-existent. The concept of fitness was largely associated with athletes and military training, with the general public less engaged in regular exercise.

Vintage Gym

Growing up, I remember my mum and I following exercise LP’s with a workout poster. We’d put it on the record player and do Keep fit with Felicity Kendal, Peter Powell and later Rosemary Connelly.

We also had a pulley system that went on the door was this the first reformer?

Fitness Today

Fast forward to 2025, and the fitness landscape has transformed dramatically. Today, we have a plethora of workout options, from HIIT and yoga to CrossFit and virtual fitness classes. Modern gyms are equipped with advanced machines, and wearable fitness trackers help us monitor our progress in real-time.

Modern Day Fitness

Fitness has become a significant part of mainstream culture. Social media platforms are flooded with fitness influencers, and public health campaigns emphasize the importance of regular exercise for both physical and mental well-being. The awareness and accessibility of fitness have never been higher.

Reflecting on these changes, it’s clear how far we’ve come in understanding and prioritising fitness. From the LP’s and the record players to today’s high-tech workouts, the journey of fitness is a testament to our evolving knowledge and commitment to health.
