As the darker evenings start to draw in and the weather becomes Autumnal, many of us notice a shift in our motivation. During the summer months, getting outside, exercising, and making healthy choices can feel much easier. When the Summer draws to an end, however, it is perfectly normal to experience fluctuations in motivation.

The important thing to remember is this:

Motivation comes and goes, but consistency is what creates results.

Not every day will feel inspiring, and that’s absolutely natural. However, a lack of motivation doesn’t mean you stop doing the things that support your goals.

Understanding Your “Why”

One of the most important aspects of maintaining motivation is identifying your reason for making a change.

Why do you want to exercise?

Why do you want to improve your lifestyle?

Why do you want to become healthier?

Understanding your “why” is crucial because it gives meaning to your actions. When motivation fades, your purpose is what keeps you moving forward.

Take time to regularly remind yourself of that reason. The stronger your connection to your “why”, the more likely you are to stay committed when things become difficult.

What You’re Not Changing, You’re Choosing

There is a phrase I strongly believe in:

“What you’re not changing, you’re choosing.”

Read that again.

If you’re not increasing your exercise levels, you are choosing not to.

If you’re not making changes that will help you achieve your goals, you are choosing to stay where you are.

If you’re not meal planning or preparing healthier meals for yourself and your family, you are choosing not to prioritise that task.

This isn’t about blame or criticism. It’s about ownership.

Nobody else can make these choices for us. Real change begins when we take responsibility for our actions and recognise that our daily decisions shape our future results.

Progress Over Perfection

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned over the years is this:

Progress is always more important than perfection.

When we first begin making changes, results can often happen quite quickly. This is because the adjustments we’re making are significant and new.

For example, during a weight loss journey, the early stages often bring noticeable changes. As time goes on, those improvements may become less dramatic, even though the positive habits are still making a difference.

This can sometimes feel discouraging.

However, long-term success comes from understanding that meaningful change takes time.

The key is to keep moving forward, even when the results are less obvious than they were at the beginning.

Your Goals May Change

Motivation often changes as our goals evolve.

As your circumstances change, your “why” may change too. That’s completely normal.

Inspiration vs Motivation

It’s great to be inspired by other people.

You may follow fitness accounts, listen to podcasts, read success stories, or admire someone else’s achievements.

Inspiration can be powerful.

However, true motivation must come from within.

You can be inspired by others, but you cannot rely on them to motivate you every day.

Everyone has different goals, priorities, and circumstances. Ultimately, it is your journey, and you must take ownership of it.

Three Ways to Maintain Motivation

1. Know Your Why

Find a reason that genuinely matters to you.

Not because someone else wants it for you.

Not because you think you should.

But because it is something you truly want.

2. Be Honest With Yourself

Ask yourself:

“Am I doing everything I can to move in the right direction?”

Have you made the changes needed?

Or have you chosen not to make them?

Being honest with yourself is often uncomfortable, but it’s necessary for growth.

3. Focus on Consistency

Progress is rarely a straight line.

There will be setbacks, challenges, and times when you need to adjust your approach.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is to keep moving forward.

Small, consistent actions repeated over time create lasting results.

The Truth About Motivation

If you’ve lost your motivation, nobody else can give it back to you.

Friends can’t do it.

Family can’t do it.

Coaches can’t do it.

The only place motivation can truly come from is within yourself.

Often, when motivation disappears, it’s because we’ve lost touch with our “why”, or we’re pursuing a goal that doesn’t genuinely matter to us.

Perhaps we’re doing it for someone else rather than for ourselves.

When that happens, take a step back and reconnect with what you truly want.

Final Thoughts

As we move into the last four months of the year, remember:

  • Find your why.
  • Take ownership of your choices.
  • Focus on progress over perfection.
  • Stay consistent with small daily actions.
  • Be patient with yourself.

Motivation may come and go, but consistency will always move you closer to your goals.

Small steps, taken consistently, will always lead further than waiting for the perfect moment to begin.
