After the holidays, days out, disrupted routines and general busyness of summer, September can feel like a fresh start. But you don’t need to wait until January to make positive changes.
We still have four whole months of the year left — plenty of time to improve your fitness, build healthy habits and finish the year feeling stronger, healthier and more energised.
September is the perfect time to reset your fitness routine, refocus on your wellbeing and set realistic goals for the rest of the year.
At PR Active Fitness, September is all about making a comeback — not through extreme diets or unrealistic exercise plans, but by getting back to the basics and moving our bodies consistently.
Why September Is a Great Time to Reset Your Fitness Routine
September naturally brings more structure back into our lives. Summer holidays are ending, schools return and our weekly routines begin to settle down again.
That makes it a brilliant opportunity to look at your current fitness and wellbeing habits.
Ask yourself:
What would I like to achieve by the end of September?
Your September fitness goal doesn’t have to involve losing weight or exercising every day.
You might want to:
- Exercise more consistently
- Improve your strength and fitness
- Walk more each day
- Increase your daily movement
- Improve your mobility and flexibility
- Drink more water
- Improve your sleep
- Make more time for yourself
- Feel more energetic
Choose something that is realistic and achievable for your life right now.
Set Realistic Fitness Goals
One of the biggest mistakes we can make when restarting a fitness routine is trying to change everything at once.
Five workouts a week.
10,000 steps every day.
Perfect nutrition.
No treats.
Early nights.
It might sound like a great plan, but is it sustainable?
Instead, choose two or three healthy habits that you can realistically maintain.
Consistency is far more important than perfection.
My philosophy has always been:
As long as you’re moving, you’re improving.
Plan Your Fitness Goals for the Rest of the Year
Instead of thinking about everything you want to achieve before Christmas, break the remaining months of the year into manageable stages.
September: Reset
Use September to reset and refocus.
Get back into a regular exercise routine, plan your workouts and increase your everyday movement.
Don’t worry about doing everything perfectly. Your goal is simply to become consistent again.
October: Build
Once you’ve established your routine, start building on it.
Could you improve your strength? Add another short workout? Walk a little further? Try a different fitness class?
Keep the habits that are working and gradually build from there.
November: Maintain
November can be challenging for fitness motivation.
The days become shorter, the weather gets colder and Christmas preparations begin.
This is when consistency really matters.
You don’t necessarily need to exercise more — concentrate on maintaining the healthy habits you’ve already created.
Remember, a 10-minute workout is always better than no workout because you didn’t have time for an hour.
December: Enjoy and Keep Moving
December is for enjoying yourself.
Christmas meals, parties and time with family and friends are all part of life.
You don’t need to choose between enjoying Christmas and looking after your health.
Walking, stretching, dancing, short workouts and staying generally active can all help support your physical and mental wellbeing throughout the festive season.
Schedule Your Workouts
If improving your fitness is important to you, put your workouts in your diary.
At the beginning of each week, look at your schedule and decide when you can realistically exercise.
Your week doesn’t need to be perfect.
It could include:
- A full fitness class
- A 10-minute home workout
- A strength session
- A lunchtime walk
- Some stretching or mobility
- A longer weekend walk
Different types of movement all contribute to your overall health and fitness.
Measure Progress Without Relying on the Scales
Fitness progress isn’t only about weight loss.
As you work towards your September fitness goals, notice the other positive changes too.
Are you:
Stronger?
Sleeping better?
More energetic?
Moving more easily?
Feeling more confident?
Less out of breath?
Exercising more consistently?
These are all signs that your fitness and wellbeing are improving.
Start Your September Comeback

You simply need to start.

What is my main September fitness goal?
How would I like to feel by Christmas?
What three healthy habits will help me get there?
Write them down and keep them somewhere you can see them.

Don’t wait for January.
Reset. Refocus. Move your body.
